AI in British Business: Adoption Has Tripled in Three Years, but Not in Depth — ONS

The UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) has recorded a nearly threefold rise in business AI adoption. Three years ago, roughly one in eight companies with 10 or more employees used AI; now it is one in three. But the growth is broad rather than deep: most companies are barely scratching the surface of what the technology can do. The ONS figure captures how many firms have touched AI at all. It says nothing about how many have turned it into real productivity gains, savings or new products.

The UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported in July 2026 that the share of British companies with 10 or more employees using artificial intelligence has risen from roughly one in eight three years ago to one in three today — a nearly threefold increase.

How Far Has Adoption Spread

AI adoption in British business has nearly tripled in three years. Where roughly one company in eight (about 12%) used AI before, one in three (about 33%) does now, according to ONS. In that time, AI has gone from a niche specialist tool to a mainstream working technology.

  • Three years ago: roughly 1 company in 8 used AI
  • Now: 1 in 3
  • Growth: nearly threefold in three years
  • Sample: British firms with 10 or more employees
  • Data source: the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS)

The "10 or more employees" threshold matters: this is not just about tech startups, but about mid-sized and large businesses, for which AI has become a routine part of work. Note, too, that "using AI" in the ONS survey is the companies' own self-assessment, not an audit of how deeply the technology is embedded in their processes. Over three years, the share of AI users was lifted not by a handful of market leaders but by the broad mass of mid-sized business.

Why Is Growth Broad, Not Deep?

Most companies that have adopted AI use it superficially — for individual tasks rather than as a technology built into core processes, The Next Web notes in its analysis of the ONS data. Breadth is expanding faster than depth: more and more firms are trying the tools, but few are rebuilding their workflows around them.

The difference between adoption in breadth and adoption in depth is the report's key story. A threefold rise in the number of companies saying they use AI does not mean the technology has become critical for them. For many, it is still experimentation: a customer-support chatbot, text generation, automation of a single routine operation. That kind of use shows up easily in the statistics but barely changes the economics of the business.

The same ONS data points to the flip side of this growth: even when one company in three reports using AI, there is a long way between "tried a tool" and "rebuilt processes around it." That gap is where it will be decided whether statistical growth turns into real productivity. For now, reach is expanding, while depth remains an area where most companies have made almost no progress.

That is exactly why the headline "tripling" figure can mislead. It records how many companies have at least touched AI, but says nothing about how many of them have seen a real effect — productivity gains, savings or new products.

"British companies have tripled their AI adoption.

But most are still barely scratching the surface," is how The Next Web puts the main takeaway.

What This Means

The tripling statistic looks like a story of explosive success, but the real divide is not between those who have adopted AI and those who have not. It is between superficial and deep use. Once reach hits a third of the market, competitive advantage shifts: the next phase for British (and not only British) business is not "do you have AI," but "how deeply is it built into your processes, and does it deliver measurable results."
