OpenAI released GPT-5.5 and Codex for AWS Bedrock to general availability

OpenAI announced that its flagship (frontier) models, including GPT-5.5, as well as the Codex development tool, have become generally available on the Amazon Bedrock platform. Now AWS enterprise customers can build solutions based on OpenAI models using the familiar security mechanisms, compliance, and infrastructure management they are already accustomed to when working with Amazon Web Services.

What changes for AWS customers

Amazon Bedrock is a managed AWS service through which companies gain access to models from multiple developers through a single API without deploying infrastructure themselves. Before OpenAI models were released on this platform, many AWS enterprise customers could already work with models from other vendors, but to use OpenAI models, they had to go beyond their cloud perimeter — for example, to Microsoft Azure, where OpenAI has historically developed the closest partnerships. The appearance of GPT-5.5 and Codex in Bedrock eliminates this dependency: enterprise customers can now keep their entire stack — from data storage to model invocation — in a single AWS infrastructure, with the same IAM settings, audit, and network isolation as for all other services.

The practical effect of such an expansion will be felt first and foremost by teams that have been forced to deploy multi-cloud architecture in recent years solely for access to a specific model — for example, keeping part of the infrastructure in Azure exclusively for GPT calls, and the rest in AWS. Now the need for such infrastructure division disappears: the entire stack can be consolidated in one cloud without losing access to cutting-edge OpenAI models.

Before the appearance of OpenAI models, the Amazon Bedrock service already offered access to models from other major developers — including, for example, Anthropic's Claude family and Amazon's own models — so adding OpenAI essentially completes the picture in which almost all leading laboratories in the world become accessible to AWS enterprise customers from a single entry point. For enterprises that have already chosen AWS as their primary cloud platform, this eliminates the need to maintain separate contracts, billing, and security procedures for each new model vendor.

For the market, this is a significant signal: competition for access to cutting-edge models increasingly occurs not so much between model developers themselves, but between cloud providers who want to offer their enterprise customers the widest possible choice of models within a single managed platform.

For AWS itself, such a partnership strengthens Bedrock's positioning as a neutral access point to models from various developers — a competitive advantage over clouds that focus on a single model ecosystem. For customers, this means fewer architectural compromises: they can test and combine models from different vendors within a single security perimeter without rebuilding infrastructure for each new vendor. Such a step also strengthens Codex's position as a corporate development tool: integration with AWS governance tools makes its implementation easier in companies with strict requirements for code audit and access control — primarily in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and the public sector, where the transition to cloud AI tools has long been hindered by compliance issues.

Historically, OpenAI and Microsoft are linked by one of the most notable partnerships in the industry, including major investments and close integration of models with the Azure cloud. The release on AWS Bedrock does not cancel this partnership, but clearly shows that OpenAI no longer considers Azure as the only distribution channel for enterprise customers — the company is going where enterprise budgets for cloud infrastructure are already concentrated, regardless of historical agreements with a particular cloud provider.
