Muse Image: Meta's New AI Image Generator for Instagram

On July 8, 2026, Meta launched Muse Image, an image-generation neural network that analyzes a request, searches the internet for information and plans the composition before creating a picture.

What Muse Image can do

Muse Image is an agentic model that does more than draw from a text prompt. Before generating, it analyzes the task, searches the internet and builds a plan, all together with the Muse Spark language model. Alexandr Wang, head of Meta's Superintelligence Labs, described this in a Threads post.

The agentic approach means the model "reasons" about the task rather than simply converting text into pixels. That sets Muse Image apart from classic text-to-image systems, where the result depends solely on how precise the prompt is.

Why put your friends into AI photos?

The new tool's flagship feature is the ability to tag other Instagram users in AI-generated images. A user tags a friend, and the model "writes" that person's likeness into the final image. This feature is the one named in the announcement's headline and became the central marketing argument of the launch.

The feature is tied directly to Instagram's social mechanics: shared posts, reactions, viral spread. At the same time, it raises questions about consent and protection of a person's likeness. Meta has not yet disclosed details of moderation and restrictions.

Where Muse Image fits in Meta's AI strategy

Muse Image is the first public result from Superintelligence Labs since Meta hired Alexandr Wang to lead the division in 2025. The Muse line is designed as Llama's successor: where Llama was an open model for developers, Muse targets mass-market consumer products. Alongside Muse Image, Meta announced Muse Video, which suggests the company is building a single multimodal ecosystem under one brand.
