Meta Launches Muse Image, First Superintelligence Labs AI Photo Model for Instagram

On July 8, 2026, Meta announced the launch of Muse Image — the first image generation model created by its Superintelligence Labs division. The model is already available in the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp; it will appear on Facebook and Messenger shortly.

What Muse Image Can Do

Muse Image is an agentic model that doesn't simply draw from a text request. Before generating, it analyzes the task, searches the internet for information, and creates a plan — all of this in collaboration with the Muse Spark language model. This was explained by Alexander Wan, director of Meta's Superintelligence Labs, in a post on Threads.

An agentic approach means the model "reasons" over the task rather than simply converting text to pixels. This fundamentally distinguishes Muse Image from classical text-to-image systems, where the result is determined solely by the accuracy of the prompt.

Why Tag Friends in AI Photos?

The flagship feature of the new tool is the ability to tag other Instagram users in AI-generated photos. A user marks a friend with a tag, and the model "places" their image into the final photo. This feature is highlighted in the announcement headline and became the central marketing argument for the launch.

The feature is directly tied to Instagram's social mechanics: collaborative posts, reactions, viral spread. At the same time, it raises questions about consent and protection of personal image — Meta has not yet disclosed details about moderation and restrictions.

Muse Image's Place in Meta AI Strategy

Muse Image is the first public result of Superintelligence Labs' work after Meta hired Alexander Wan to head the division in 2025. The Muse line is envisioned as Llama's successor: while Llama was an open model for developers, Muse targets mainstream consumer products. Alongside Muse Image, Meta announced Muse Video — apparently, the company is building a unified multimodal ecosystem under a single brand.
