Anthropic in July 2026 updated the Claude Cowork agent: tasks now continue to execute in the cloud even after closing your laptop, and the interface for launching and managing the agent has been moved to your smartphone.

What Changed for Users

Before this update, agent tools, including Claude Cowork, required an active session. Close your browser or put your laptop to sleep — the task would stop. For short requests this was tolerable, but for long, multi-step tasks — research, data analysis, workflow automation — constant dependence on an open device was a serious limitation.

Anthropic moved computation to the server side. Now a user can start a task from their laptop, leave the house, and several hours later receive the finished result on their smartphone — without needing to keep the computer on.

The mobile interface allows you to launch agent tasks directly from your smartphone, track progress in the background, receive notifications when tasks complete, and if needed, give the agent additional instructions while it's running.

Why Anthropic Is Betting on the Smartphone

Mobile expansion of Claude Cowork is part of Anthropic's larger strategic bet on agents as a core product. The company is consistently pushing Claude toward autonomous task execution, not just answer generation.

The smartphone changes how you interact with an agent. If before the agent was a workplace tool — you launch it from a computer, you monitor it from a computer — now it's turning into a constant background assistant: launch it from your phone, go to a meeting, come back — everything is ready.

Competitors are moving in the same direction, but via different paths: OpenAI is deepening agent capabilities in mobile ChatGPT, Google is embedding Gemini at the OS level in Android, Apple is integrating AI features into native iOS apps. Anthropic chooses the niche of cross-platform continuity — the task lives not on the device, but in the cloud, and the user connects to it from anywhere.

What Is Claude Cowork

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent platform for autonomous execution of multi-step tasks: exploring a topic, writing and running code, working with files, interacting with external services. Unlike regular chat mode, where the user directs each step, Cowork receives a goal and autonomously plans actions to achieve it.

Before the update, agent autonomy was limited by the duration of an active session — a practical ceiling of a few minutes to tens of minutes before the device went to sleep. Background execution removes this ceiling.

What This Means

Anthropic is turning Claude from a chatbot into an agent that works continuously — like an app you don't need to keep open. If the pattern of "always-running agents" becomes an industry standard, 2026 could be a turning point: AI assistants break free from the desktop and become part of everyday mobile experience.
