Gopuff and xAI have launched Go — an AI agent embedded in the instant delivery service's app. The shopping assistant runs on multimodal Grok models and accepts requests in any format: text, voice, or photo.
What Can Agent Go Do
Go is an AI assistant integrated directly into Gopuff's app interface. Its task is to rethink how people search for and choose products for fast delivery. Traditional e-commerce search requires precision: the buyer must know the brand, name, and sometimes the SKU. Go works differently — it understands context and intention. A user can write "something sweet for tea in the evening," dictate a shopping list by voice, or photograph an empty refrigerator shelf. The agent will parse the request, match it against Gopuff's catalog, and suggest specific options — which can be added to the cart immediately. Under the hood, three Grok models are at work:
- Text model — understands free-form requests, considers context and buyer intent
- Audio model — recognizes voice commands without additional transcription
- Visual model — analyzes product photos, packaging, and labels
The combination of modalities allows Go to fit different scenarios: from quick voice input while cooking to photos of your fridge contents late at night.
Why This Matters for Gopuff
Gopuff is one of the pioneers of quick commerce in the US. The company has built a network of its own mini-warehouses in dozens of American and British cities and specializes in delivering goods in 15–30 minutes. Unlike classic aggregators like DoorDash, Gopuff stores inventory on its own warehouses, giving it greater control over speed and price.
In quick commerce, many decisions are made on impulse. The buyer wants not a specific product, but a solution to a problem — "what to snack on," "what to use to clean the floor," "what to drink in the evening." Traditional search handles this poorly: it returns literal results, not contextual ones. Language models handle ambiguity incomparably better.
Beyond convenience, the AI agent is a tool for growing the average order value. It can recommend complementary products, suggest replacements for out-of-stock items, and personalize offers based on purchase history.
xAI Enters the Corporate Market
For xAI, the partnership with Gopuff is one of the first publicly announced commercial cases for Grok outside the X platform (formerly Twitter). Elon Musk's company launched Grok in late 2023 as a competitor to ChatGPT, but for a long time the model was only available to X Premium subscribers. By embedding Grok in a third-party app, xAI demonstrates its ambition to become a B2B platform — following OpenAI's model of selling API access to GPT to thousands of companies.
This is a shift in positioning: xAI stops being just "a competitor to Anthropic and OpenAI" and claims the role of AI infrastructure provider for business. Gopuff's competitors are already moving in the same direction. Instacart launched AI search in partnership with OpenAI, Amazon is embedding its Rufus voice assistant. Against this backdrop, choosing Grok over GPT is a deliberate bet on differentiation.
What This Means
An AI agent in an instant delivery app is a signal that language models are becoming a standard component of consumer products. If Go demonstrates real growth in conversion rate and average order value for Gopuff, it will accelerate the race: similar solutions will appear in other retail apps significantly faster.
For xAI, this is the first serious step toward turning Grok from a public chat into a commercial B2B platform.
