ChatGPT has crossed the 1 billion monthly active users mark — as of May 2025. This is the fastest start in the history of internet services: the previous record holder, Google Maps, took five years to achieve this.
Scale of the Record
Data from analytics company Sensor Tower, cited by CNBC, show ChatGPT's rapid audience growth over the past several months. As recently as early 2024, the service had around 100 million monthly active users — an impressive figure for a product launched in late 2022. In a year and a half, the user base grew tenfold.
Context makes the figure even more remarkable. TikTok reached a billion users in roughly three years, Instagram in six years, Facebook in approximately eight. All of them grew during an era of already mass internet and smartphones. ChatGPT achieved the same in substantially shorter timeframes, despite dealing with a more complex product with a higher understanding threshold for new users.
What Drove the Growth
No single factor explains such dynamics — it was a combination:
- API integration — ChatGPT is built into thousands of third-party services: Notion, Slack, Shopify and hundreds of others. A significant portion of the billion users interact with ChatGPT without even opening chat.openai.com
- Free access — the basic version is available at no charge, removing the main barrier to first contact. Monetization comes through Plus subscription and Enterprise tier
- Mobile applications — native clients for iOS and Android brought ChatGPT to markets in India, Brazil, and Southeast Asia, where desktop is not the primary device
- Language localization — support for 50+ languages allowed reaching hundreds of millions of users for whom English is not native
- Media waves — each major model release created a surge of attention and influx of new audience
What Will Change
A billion users is not just a marketing milestone. It's the moment when a service transforms from a tool into infrastructure. Something similar happened with Google Search in the early 2000s: when the search engine became the default choice, the entire content market was forced to adapt to it.
For competitors — Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot — this means a race no longer just for model quality, but for user habit. When a person becomes accustomed to a specific interface, switching requires significant motivation. This is why OpenAI actively expands its ecosystem: the plugin store, projects, personalized GPT versions.
For regulators — in the EU and US — a billion users makes ChatGPT a systemically important service. Discussion about platform responsibility, algorithm transparency, and impact on the information space will inevitably reach a new level.
What This Means
ChatGPT has stopped being a tool for early adopters and entered the category of mass utilities — where search, maps, and messengers already reside. The next question: can OpenAI retain this audience when competitors with trillion-dollar budgets do everything to poach users.
