AWS has announced the release of a new version of OpenSearch Serverless — a managed database developed from scratch to support AI agents. This is a landmark moment: one of the world's largest cloud providers is effectively acknowledging that the architecture of the internet is changing radically.

What OpenSearch Serverless Can Do

The service is designed specifically for agentic workloads — when autonomous AI systems need to quickly search, process, and analyze large volumes of text and vector data. OpenSearch Serverless supports vector search for semantic analysis, full-text keyword search, and operates in no-code mode: developers don't need to manage servers or write configuration files to initialize. The service automatically scales depending on the load and requires exactly zero preliminary setup. This is critical for agents that need to work 24/7 without supervision and adapt to unpredictable traffic spikes.

What Problems Does OpenSearch Serverless Solve

It is universal: agents use it for:

  • Searching for relevant information in their knowledge base before making decisions
  • Analyzing structured data and documents in real time
  • Processing large volumes of text and synthesizing information from multiple sources
  • Working with vector representations of data for semantic search, when meaning matters more than keywords

This is particularly important because modern AI agents differ significantly in architecture from a traditional web application. They require instant access to knowledge, are capable of processing hundreds of requests in parallel, and critically, work at the client's expense — they are billed not by working time, but by the number of operations and volume of data.

The Internet Is Being Rebuilt for Machines

This event is symbolic. Five years ago, cloud infrastructure was built with peak loads from mobile applications and websites in mind. Today, AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure are simultaneously releasing services fully optimized for AI.

Amazon has rewritten its Trainium chips for training large language models. Meta and Google are building their own custom processors for inference. OpenAI and Anthropic require gigawatts of electricity to operate their models.

And in parallel with this, cloud providers are redesigning databases, caching systems, monitoring systems — everything that agents might need for autonomous operation. Users and their data are taking a back seat. The main architecture of the internet is now being rebuilt around the needs of machines that must communicate with each other quickly and without delays.

What This Means

The traditional internet was built for people who visit websites, watch videos, and write emails. The machine internet is being built for agents that dance with each other at a tempo inaccessible to human perception. OpenSearch Serverless is another brick in the architecture of that new network, where people are increasingly becoming observers, and the main work is being done by code.
