YouTube has launched a new AI feature that creates a personalized video feed based on a user's text description. No more endless scrolling through the usual feed searching for content that matches a specific mood or interest.

How Personal Feeds Work

The feature is available in the 'Your custom feed' section on YouTube's homepage. Users enter a prompt—a description of what they want to watch: a specific genre, interest, mood, or combination of topics. AI analyzes the request and generates a personal feed from videos that match the description. For example, you can enter 'cozy travel vlogs from the mountains' or 'quick dinner recipes,' and YouTube will suggest matching content.

YouTube also offers ready-made prompt suggestions to choose from—in case you don't feel like writing your own description. The suggestions include popular categories: documentaries, educational videos, music and dance.

Once you find a suitable feed, you can pin it to the top of YouTube's homepage for quick access in the future. This is convenient if you frequently return to the same type of content.

Where and When This Works

The feature can be used from the YouTube mobile app or desktop. Currently, it's available to English-speaking users in the US, but will gradually roll out to other regions and languages. If you're in a supported region, the feature should appear soon.

  • Works on iOS and Android
  • Supported on the desktop version of YouTube.com
  • Starting with English language
  • Gradually expanding to other regions
  • Available only to logged-in users

Why YouTube is Adding This Feature

YouTube is trying to make the feed less intrusive—instead of an algorithm deciding what you should watch, you now describe your preferences yourself. This is similar to how AI assistants work in other services, but applied to video content.

Personal feeds help you dive deeper into topics that interest you without unnecessary distractions and recommendations you don't care about. The feature can be used to quickly switch between different types of content. For example, in the morning you watch educational videos, during the day—music, in the evening—comedy. Instead of waiting for the algorithm to adapt to your mood, you immediately switch to the appropriate feed.

What This Means

YouTube is learning to listen to users through natural language. This is a first step toward more flexible control over what we watch. Competitors (TikTok, Instagram) will need to hurry with similar features, or YouTube will become more convenient for people who know what they want.
