Spotify and ElevenLabs Launched an AI Audiobook Generator Without Exclusive Contracts

Spotify and ElevenLabs have unveiled a new tool that enables authors to automatically create audiobooks using artificial intelligence. The key distinction from competitors is that authors remain fully independent: there is no requirement to sign exclusive contracts that restrict distribution, and books can be published on any platform.
How the Generator Works
The tool uses advanced speech synthesis technology from ElevenLabs, a company specializing in creating natural AI voices. Authors upload the text or PDF of their book, and the system automatically converts it to audio format. The process is fully automated: neural networks trained on thousands of hours of real speech analyze the text structure, place intonational pauses, and generate reading with natural pronunciation.
You can choose from over 100 ready-made voices of different genders, ages, languages, and accents. The system offers voices of both young narrators and older speakers, allowing you to perfectly match the voice to the book's genre. Interestingly, the system allows you to create your own voice based on an audio sample in just minutes.
The neural network automatically applies appropriate pauses, places logical stresses, and monitors intonation so that the audiobook sounds like it was read by an experienced actor. The entire process from file upload to finished audiobook takes minutes instead of weeks of professional voiceover work in a studio.
- Upload your book in any format (PDF, ePub, Word, TXT)
- Choose a voice from the catalog or create your own in minutes
- Adjust the reading speed, pauses, and emotional tone
- Download the finished audio file in the desired format and quality
- Publish on any platform — no restrictions or contracts
Freedom Instead of Exclusivity
Here Spotify made an unusual and strategically important move. Most platforms that offer tools to authors require exclusivity: "upload to us, only us, for a minimum of 90 days, or face penalties." Spotify does not require this.
Authors who created an audiobook through the Spotify tool can simultaneously upload it to Apple Books, Google Play, Audible, Amazon, Scribd, or any other service. No restrictions, no penalties for "infidelity." This starkly contrasts with traditional publishing, where authors are often forced to choose: either work with a publisher and get an advance (but lose full control), or remain without support and distribution.
Spotify offers a third way: use our technology completely free, create content, distribute everywhere. The platform is betting on author goodwill and long-term relationships instead of contractual constraints.
What This Means for Authors and the Market
For independent authors, this is a direct opportunity to finally monetize their content. Professional voiceover for a full-length audiobook costs $2,000–$10,000 and takes months of work. Previously, such authors simply fell out of the audio business because self-narration sounded amateurish.
Now they can enter the market in practically hours, without massive expenses. For Spotify, this is a way to fill the catalog with quality content without multimillion-dollar investments in exclusive deals. The platform does not need to pay advances — authors upload content themselves hoping for fair earnings.
For listeners, this is an expansion of offerings through authors from different countries and cultures who would have otherwise remained on the margins of the publishing business. The audiobook market could change significantly in the direction of greater diversity.
