Canva has integrated into Google Gemini, completing its global strategy of integration with all major AI assistants. The company presented its Connected App at Google I/O, and now the design editor is available to Gemini users just as it previously appeared in Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot.

Integration Strategy

Over the past year, Canva has systematically embedded itself into all top AI assistants. First came Claude, then ChatGPT, then Microsoft Copilot. Now Google Gemini — completing full coverage of major players. Canva's strategy is clear: the company wants to become an indispensable design layer for every popular AI assistant, allowing users to create visual content without switching between applications. This is fundamentally different from the traditional approach where companies compete directly with AI models for user attention. Canva chose an embedding strategy — to become part of each major assistant's ecosystem. This approach allows the company to remain relevant in a rapidly changing landscape without attempting to build its own AI assistant.

What Connected App Can Do

Connected App for Gemini provides three core functions:

  • Design generation — the user describes an idea in chat, and Canva instantly creates a finished layout
  • Editing — modifying and improving existing designs without switching between applications
  • Library search — access to millions of Canva templates and assets right in the Gemini interface

This radically lowers the barrier to entry: users don't need to open a separate Canva window or figure out the editor interface. Design work becomes part of natural dialogue with AI. For content creators and entrepreneurs, this means you can describe an idea in any language, and AI together with Canva will create ready-made visuals for social media or presentations.

Position in New Landscape

Integrations into four major AI assistants demonstrate how Canva is redefining itself in the era of AI assistants. Rather than direct competition, the company is embedding itself, becoming a critical interface for visual creativity. This allows Canva to remain a central design tool even when users work through AI. This is particularly important because LLM assistants are good at generating ideas and text, but the visual component requires a specialized tool with a large asset library. Canva fills this niche — it becomes the visual extension for every AI. The company understands that the future of design is embedded tools within AI platforms used by millions of people.

What This Means

Canva's embedding into all major AI assistants demonstrates a new trend: companies that win are not those competing directly with AI, but those that embed themselves and create synergy. For other companies, this is a lesson in staying relevant — better to seek integration opportunities with popular AI platforms and become an integral part of them.
