At Google I/O 2026, held May 19-20 in Mountain View, the company unveiled three strategic changes that will reshape its product landscape for years to come: a new Gemini Intelligence architecture, a full-featured AR OS based on Android, and the official end of Chromebook as a separate platform.

Gemini Intelligence Redefines AI Interaction

The first announcement—Gemini Intelligence, a new architecture that unifies Google Search, generative AI, and personal agents into a single ecosystem layer. This is not just a ChatGPT competitor, but a reimagining of how people find information and accomplish tasks. According to Google's vision, Gemini Intelligence will learn each user's behavior—their search habits, preferences, context from calendar and email. Based on this, the agent will anticipate user needs before they formulate a query. The company has not yet disclosed technical details, but promised live demonstrations at the conference showing how this works in the context of Search, Gmail, Google Photos, and other services.

Android XR—Glasses Instead of a Smartphone

The second key announcement—Android XR, a full-featured OS for mixed reality (augmented reality). Google presented a generation of AR glasses prototypes that conference attendees can try on and test. Unlike Apple's Vision Pro, which focuses on media and content, Android XR targets productivity: document work, video calls, smartphone management alongside glasses. Google announced it will work with manufacturers (Qualcomm confirmed participation) on more affordable versions. The first commercial glasses will arrive within a year.

Chromebook Disappears, Android Absorbs It

The third and most surprising announcement—Google officially closing Chromebook as a separate platform. Chrome OS, which was an elegant solution for cheap laptops, will no longer be developed as an independent OS. Instead, all new devices will move to Android with built-in web application support. This means:

  • Chromebook as a market category will disappear by 2027
  • Existing Chromebooks will get the ability to transition to an Android-based OS through an update
  • Web application developers will gain direct integration with the Google Play ecosystem and Android services
  • Corporate buyers will be able to choose one universal Android device instead of choosing between a laptop and tablet
  • This solution strengthens Google's control over devices across all categories

Strategy: From Multiplicity to a Unified Stack

The three announcements reflect a single Google strategy: instead of managing several parallel operating systems and platforms, the company is consolidating everything around Android + cloud services. Gemini Intelligence becomes the intelligent layer that works everywhere: on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and now on AR glasses. For users, this could mean a more coherent experience and less switching between interfaces. For developers—a unified platform and a single set of APIs. But it also means further concentration of Google's power in controlling mobile ecosystems, which is already raising questions from regulators in the EU and US.

What This Means

Google is demonstrating a long-term bet on AI agents, mixed reality, and a unified Android-first architecture. For companies, this is a signal: invest in Android development, learn to work with AI agents, prepare for AR as a primary interface. For users—expect a more predictive and automated Google.
