NextEra Energy has announced the acquisition of Dominion Energy for $67 billion — the largest utility merger in U.S. history. Investors and analysts see in this a signal: even energy giants are forced to expand to meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence.

Megadeal in Energy

NextEra — the largest renewable energy producer in North America, manages solar and wind power plants across the continent. Dominion — one of the largest utility companies in the USA with massive grid infrastructure and generating capacity. The merger will create an energy titan with hundreds of billions of dollars in assets and presence in critical regions from Florida to Virginia. But this is not a typical corporate consolidation for scale and cost savings. It reflects a different logic entirely — a race for an energy resource that has suddenly become scarce.

The deal is signed against the backdrop of unprecedented electricity demand created by data centers and AI farms.

Energy for AI Becomes Critical

The scale of demand is impressive and grows every month. OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon — all simultaneously expanding data center capacity, each striving to secure access to the maximum amount of computing resources for their AI models. Each new large model requires stable electricity supply on the scale of an entire industrial enterprise. The problem: electrical grids in many regions are already operating at capacity. In Florida, where Dominion's assets are physically located, this crisis is felt most acutely. The network cannot handle the growing load. Therefore, NextEra decided to buy Dominion — this is not only an expansion of generating capacity, but control over critical grid infrastructure that will allow connecting more AI consumers.

  • A modern data center for AI training consumes 10-30 MW of electricity annually
  • One major Google data center consumes as much electricity as a city of 250,000 people
  • Electricity demand in the USA has grown 15% over the past three years — mainly due to AI development

Signal of Change

This deal sends a clear message to the market: energy is entering a completely new era. Companies that want to remain competitive must not only produce electricity, but also control sources and networks. NextEra's move demonstrates the strategy: whoever controls electricity has power over the AI industry and the economy of the future. Analysts expect this deal will be followed by others. Consolidation in the energy sector will become even more intense. Competition for grid assets and generating capacity — this is what will determine the economy of the next five years.

What This Means

The era when energy was a boring utilitarian sector with predictable revenues is over. Electricity has become a strategic resource, like oil in the twentieth century. The next wave of mega-deals and investments in energy — this is not about cost optimization, but about the struggle for power over critical infrastructure in the age of AI.
