Moonshot AI Reached $20 Billion Valuation: Meituan and China Mobile Invested $2 Billion

Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based company developing the Kimi chatbot, has raised $2 billion in a new funding round. The valuation reached $20 billion, becoming a benchmark for one of the most aggressive financial surges in China's AI sector.

Kimi: Product and Market

Kimi is a Chinese AI assistant, less known in Russia than ChatGPT or Claude, but a serious player in its home market. The product has millions of users who turn to it for complex analytical tasks, long discussions, and research. The platform positions itself as strong in deep reasoning and can maintain context across lengthy dialogues.

Round Composition and Players

The funding round was led by Meituan Dragon Ball — the investment fund of Meituan, the giant of online delivery and services. Its participation shows that large operational companies see AI as a strategic asset. Round participants include:

  • China Mobile — China's largest mobile operator with state participation
  • CITIC Private Equity Funds — the investment fund of the CITIC Group conglomerate
  • Existing Moonshot AI investors

Each participant invests in Kimi with its own objectives: Meituan — for integration into its service ecosystem, China Mobile — for telecom platforms.

Growth Speed Without Precedent

16 months ago, in January 2025, Moonshot AI received a valuation of $3 billion. Now it has reached $20 billion — a 6.7x increase in less than two years. In the West, such growth rates are rare: typically AI companies grow slower due to competition and regulatory constraints. Beijing is demonstrating its readiness to accelerate financing of national AI champions.

What This Means

This is not just a story about a successful startup. Beijing openly positions Moonshot AI as a national competitor to Western AI giants. When China Mobile and state-owned CITIC participate in the round, it signals that the company is becoming part of the country's strategy. Kimi is receiving resources for serious competition in the global AI market.
