Nous Research has released Hermes Agent — an open-source AI agent that you can run on your own VPS and train for your specific tasks. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude Code, this agent operates independently, requires training, and over time becomes an executive secretary.

What is Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent is an open-source application from Nous Research. Its main feature: the agent runs on your server, not in the cloud, and can function 24/7 without your involvement. Key capabilities:

  • Autonomous execution of tasks on the internet (clicking, filling forms, analyzing data)
  • Self-learning and adaptation to new tasks
  • Integration with messengers (Telegram, Discord, and others)
  • Modular architecture with a set of tools
  • Complete independence from corporate infrastructure

However, the agent is not magic. Like any assistant, you need to train it, show examples, and correct its behavior.

Choosing the Brain for the Agent

Hermes Agent uses existing LLM models as its brain. This could be Claude, GPT-5, Llama, or any other model with an available API. The choice depends on your requirements: for simple tasks, a fast and cheap Llama is suitable; for analytics — Claude; for maximum power — GPT-5. Interestingly, you're not tied to a single model. Hermes's architecture allows you to quickly switch between LLMs or even use different models for different types of tasks. This provides tremendous flexibility, especially if you're working with a budget.

Where It Works Well

The author of an article on Habr tested Hermes on four real-world cases, and here's what happened:

  • Source monitoring — the agent watches news, blogs, forums and collects relevant information
  • Routine automation — filling forms, sending emails, creating reports
  • Content management — publishing articles, syncing with social networks
  • Data analytics — structuring information, creating summaries

But there are limitations. Hermes works well with web interfaces and text, but can get lost if it encounters complex logic, CAPTCHA, or non-standard data formats. This is not magic, but a specific tool with pros and cons.

What This Means

Hermes Agent is a step from cloud workhorses like ChatGPT toward personal autonomous agents. If you're willing to spend time on configuration and training, you'll get an assistant that works 24/7 exactly on your terms, without dependence on a cloud provider. This is especially important for those who want to automate specific tasks: niche monitoring, competitive intelligence gathering, managing their own content.
