ArchiMate is a powerful notation for modeling information system architecture, but it is rarely used in practice. Even among architects, its prevalence does not exceed 25%, although it has unique capabilities for describing business logic, systems, and their interaction. Why does this happen and how can artificial intelligence help architects master ArchiMate — Vladimir Zuev, head of the Java practice at Axenix, tells us about this.

Why ArchiMate is Not Popular

ArchiMate emerged as a standard from The Open Group to unify approaches to architectural design. However, it has not gained widespread adoption. The main reason is the lack of practical guides and detailed descriptions in official documentation. Architects often prefer to draw diagrams in tools they are already familiar with rather than learn a new notation. However, this is an oversight. ArchiMate allows you to describe architecture at different levels of abstraction: from business processes to technical implementation. This is especially important when working on complex systems where you need to align the vision between business, analysts, and developers.

Strengths of the Notation

ArchiMate offers a set of tools for complete architectural description:

  • Business layer — description of processes, services, and roles
  • Application layer — system components, interfaces, and interaction
  • Technology layer — infrastructure, devices, and network
  • Relationships between layers — showing how business is realized through applications and technology
  • Visual unambiguity — each element has a unique symbol, avoiding confusion

Thanks to these capabilities, ArchiMate is ideal for complex projects where architecture needs to be aligned and communicated across teams.

The Role of AI in Architectural Design

Artificial intelligence can significantly accelerate an architect's work. Modern models are capable of helping an architect generate initial diagram variants based on a textual system description, analyze proposed solutions and recommend improvements, transform verbal requirements into ArchiMate notation, verify consistency between architecture layers, and automatically generate documentation. For an architect, this means they can focus on making strategic decisions while AI takes on routine tasks of description and visualization.

What This Means

ArchiMate becomes more accessible thanks to practical guides and AI-powered tools. This can help the industry transition to a unified standard for architectural design and improve communication between business and IT on large projects.
