Adding a new skill to an AI agent, developers expect a straightforward result: fewer errors, more stable behavior, better understanding of tools. In practice, the opposite often happens — the agent starts working unpredictably and unstably.

How Skills Conflict

When a new skill enters the system, strange effects arise. One skill activates almost all the time, even if the task doesn't require it — as if the system incorrectly sees it everywhere. Another, conversely, remains invisible — the agent seems unaware of its existence and doesn't use it even in suitable situations.

A third skill triggers in tandem with neighboring skills and they interfere with each other, creating cascading errors. For example, one skill calls conditions that fit the second, the second calls the third, and as a result you get a chaotic feedback loop. The result is that at some point it seems the agent's quality has dropped below the original level.

Degradation is visible on the charts. And there's a temptation: turn off all skills and return to a clean configuration without them.

Main Integration Problems

  • Overactivation — a skill activates in a context where it's not required, takes over control and introduces noise into the results
  • Underactivation — the agent doesn't notice a skill even in situations where it needs to be applied, as if it's invisible to the decision-making system
  • Skill interference — skills trigger in a wave, one calls conditions for another, they start to interfere with each other and create unwanted feedback loops
  • Context creep — each new skill expands the space of possible actions, the agent loses focus and becomes less predictable

How to Fix It

The problem often lies not in the skills themselves, but in their integration. The system that decides when to enable a particular skill is not always calibrated correctly. First, you need to explicitly define context and triggers for each skill.

Don't allow vague conditions like "if the task is related to data". You need to be specific: "if the user asks for structured data from API X with parameters Y, then use skill Z". Second, check interactions before adding.

You need to analyze what existing skills the new skill might encounter, and explicitly write out priorities. If two skills can trigger on the same situation, one needs to be given priority of activation. Third, continuously monitor behavior in production.

Add detailed logging that shows when, why, and with what confidence each skill activates. This will help catch incorrect activation early, before it affects quality.

What This Means

Skills are a powerful way to expand the capabilities of AI agents, but they require careful design and integration. Simply adding a new skill is not enough. You need to ensure that the system managing their activation works predictably and doesn't create side effects. This is a matter of systems engineering.
