The organizers of the Golden Globe Awards have updated their rules regarding the use of artificial intelligence. From now on, films and TV series created with AI will not be automatically disqualified — but only if a human remained the primary creator and AI performed a supporting role.

When AI is Permitted

The new rules allow AI application at various stages of production. This can include visual effects, video processing, sound filtering, color correction, and other technical processes that have traditionally been handled by specialists in post-production. The philosophy is simple: if a person still makes the main creative decisions and can explain them, then AI is just a more powerful tool than Photoshop or Premiere Pro.

The organizers clarify that generative AI (when the machine fully creates a scene or character from a text description) is on the blacklist. Auxiliary AI, which complements, improves, or accelerates the author's work — is on the whitelist. The boundary is blurred, so nominees will be required to disclose all tools used.

  • Permitted: special effects that complement the author's vision
  • Permitted: color correction, sound processing, detail enhancement
  • Forbidden: using AI as the primary creative mechanism
  • Required: disclosure of all tools used in the nomination

Industry Compromise

The decision became a compromise between two camps of the film industry. Actor unions, directors, and screenwriters lobbied for caution: introducing AI could undermine copyright and exploit creative labor. At the same time, producers and technical specialists are already actively implementing AI in their workflow — a complete ban would mean that half of the projects already in preparation could not participate in major awards.

The Golden Globe chose a third path: not to forbid technology, but to establish clear boundaries between creativity and mechanization. This is the first major step by a mainstream awards ceremony toward the AI era, and it is being carefully studied by other film awards.

Trend or Norm?

The film industry has been experimenting with AI for several years. Visual effects that were previously drawn by hand are now often generated based on descriptions. Some studios use AI to speed up storyboarding or creating rough cuts. The question is not whether AI will be in cinema — it's already there. The question is how to regulate it without killing the industry and without ignoring the concerns of creative professionals.

What This Means

The award recognized that AI has already changed the process of making films. But copyright and human creativity remain at the top of the hierarchy for now. Over time, these rules will be revisited — as it becomes clear where the real boundary lies between tool and creator. For now, the Golden Globe has established the first landmark.
