RingCentral expands AI Receptionist (AIR) — adding integrations with three key platforms. The company is trying to take its virtual receptionist beyond simply answering calls and make it a full-fledged customer service assistant.

What's New in AIR

The receptionist can now work directly with Shopify, Calendly, and WhatsApp. Through Shopify it processes order information, checks product availability and prices. Through Calendly it views schedules and immediately books meetings without transferring to a human. WhatsApp allows communication directly in the messenger — discussing a purchase or problem in a familiar interface for customers.

The integrations expand the scope of application. In the US there is already a version with WhatsApp Business, in other regions local apps will be added.

From Calls to Service

Previously, AIR only caught incoming calls and redirected them to the right specialist. Now it solves part of the tasks completely — from answering questions about product availability to booking meetings. A human gets involved only in complex situations. This reduces the load on call centers and speeds up customer service. Average response time has dropped (RingCentral didn't name exact figures, but promises cases of reduction by a third).

  • Checking product availability through Shopify
  • Booking time slots through Calendly
  • Direct communication in WhatsApp without transfers
  • Automatic routing by priority

Competition in AI Assistants

OpenAI recently showed Operator — a browser agent, Google and Amazon are preparing something similar. But RingCentral chose a different path: embed the AI assistant in an already installed communication platform. The strategy makes sense. Small businesses don't need separate software — the AI works where contacts, calls, and histories are already stored. For RingCentral, this is a way to retain customers and add new revenue based on an existing product.

What This Means

The AI receptionist is moving from hype into real work. For small businesses — relief (no need to hire another person), for large communication operators — a new revenue source. Complete automation of calls is still far away, but routine tasks are leaving people behind.
