The partnership announced in June 2024 with great fanfare between OpenAI and Apple, which was supposed to revolutionize artificial intelligence in the iPhone and Siri ecosystem, unexpectedly fell apart at the seams. OpenAI's lawyers are already working with an external law firm, considering options for action, including sending Apple an official notice of breach of contract. The lawsuit has not yet been filed, but conflict is clearly in the air.

The Rift in the Rush

At first glance, the deal looked simply perfect. OpenAI gained access to hundreds of millions of Apple devices worldwide. Apple gained cutting-edge AI to finally modernize Siri — a voice assistant that had lagged behind competitors for years.

The announcement in summer 2024 caused excitement in the industry and financial markets. It seemed the era of old AI in the iPhone had come to an end. However, reality proved far more mundane.

Over time, it became clear that integration was moving at a snail's pace. The timelines for launching key features were missed repeatedly. Apple appeared reluctant to fulfill the commitments that looked so compelling in the June press release.

OpenAI, meanwhile, kept hearing promises of "coming soon," but nothing materialized beyond words.

On the Brink of Legal Action

OpenAI has decided its patience has run out. The company has entered preparation mode for legal action. According to Bloomberg, lawyers are already exploring ways to pressure Apple. Several options are on the table:

  • Sending an official notice of breach of contract
  • Preparing litigation materials
  • Demanding compensation for losses from delay
  • Negotiating a reformatting of the deal

So far, no lawsuit has been filed. It seems OpenAI still wants to give Apple one last chance. But the legal machinery is already in motion, and each day of delay brings the moment closer when the deal could end up in court.

A Lesson for the Entire Industry

The OpenAI-Apple story is a reminder that partnerships between technology giants are often far more complex than they appear from the outside. A pretty joint announcement, a press conference, and enthusiastic analyst commentary are not yet a guarantee of success. Real integration can encounter organizational obstacles, technical complexities, or simply a lack of motivation from one of the parties. For other companies dreaming of collaboration with Apple, this is an important signal: promises can stall, contracts must be ironclad, and you cannot always rely on goodwill.

What This Means

For iPhone users, this means modern Siri will remain without advanced ChatGPT in the foreseeable future. For OpenAI, it's a defeat in the attempt to deeply integrate into Apple's ecosystem. For the entire AI industry, it's a signal: even the most powerful partnerships can fall apart if there is no alignment in goals and real commitment to fulfilling obligations.
