Google DeepMind employees voted to create a union. The main goal is to prevent the company from using their developments for military purposes, including for Israel and the USA. This is one of the rare cases when AI developers actively oppose the direction of their own technologies.

How the vote took place

At the DeepMind facility at Google's British headquarters, a union election was held. Employees requested recognition of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union as joint representatives for negotiations with management. The voting result is impressive: 98% of CWU members working at DeepMind voted in favor of creating a union. A letter with this request was submitted to Google management on Tuesday. Such a high percentage of agreement is rarely seen in the corporate world, especially when it comes to politically sensitive issues. Workers clearly consider the problem serious and are ready to fight for their convictions.

What employees are concerned about

Workers stated that their AI models are already being used in ways that violate international law. One employee said in a written statement distributed by the CWU: "We don't want our models to be complicit in violations of international law, but they are already helping in the genocide of Palestinians." Employees' concerns cover several aspects:

  • Use of AI systems in military operations and purposes
  • Assistance in potential human rights violations
  • Lack of transparency and control over technology applications
  • Mismatch between Google's declared values and actual use of developments
  • Ethical conflict between engineering ambitions and moral responsibility

Broader context

This is not the first time that tech workers have united for ethical purposes. Google and its parent company Alphabet have already faced union movements and employee protests, especially on military contracts. In 2018, more than 3,000 Google employees signed a letter against the Maven project, a military contract related to video processing for drones. That conflict showed that within companies there are people willing to risk their careers for principles.

What this means

Union movements in the AI industry are becoming increasingly active. Companies are increasingly vulnerable to employee demands for ethical compliance. Google DeepMind must now officially respond to workers' request: either recognize the union and begin negotiations, or openly justify its position on technology use. Either choice will have consequences for the company's reputation and its position as a leader in the AI field.
