SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is preparing for one of the company's largest investment projects in its history. According to reports from The New York Times and CNBC, SpaceX is investing a minimum of $55 billion in building a giant AI chip manufacturing factory, codenamed Terafab, in Austin, Texas.

Scale of Investment: Bigger Than NASA

SpaceX has filed detailed documents for tax benefits in Grimes County, Texas, revealing the full scope of its ambitious project. The initial phase of construction will require an investment of $55 billion. However, in the documentation, the company indicates that if all additional phases are built, the total project cost could reach $119 billion.

For context: NASA's entire annual budget is approximately $25 billion. SpaceX's investment in a single factory exceeds it by more than twofold. This is comparable to the annual GDP of many countries and demonstrates how seriously Musk takes the need for his own manufacturing capabilities for chips.

Financing at this scale reflects intense competition for access to semiconductor manufacturing in the era of the AI revolution. SpaceX is not hiding its intention to become one of the key players in the AI accelerator manufacturing market.

What Terafab Will Produce

Musk first publicly announced the Terafab project in March 2026, immediately voicing ambitious goals. The factory will produce specialized chips capable of supporting computational loads with a total capacity of up to 200 gigawatts per year. This is not just a large number—this is a scale that can meet the needs of the largest AI models, cloud services, and new generations of LLMs. According to the plans:

  • Mass production of specialized processors for AI acceleration
  • Scaling production to meet rapidly growing demand for chips for language model training
  • Creation of an independent source of microchips for both SpaceX's own needs and for sale to external customers
  • Potential reduction of dependence on NVIDIA and other traditional semiconductor suppliers

The factory will be located in Texas's technology hub, providing convenient logistics and access to qualified labor.

Why Musk Needs His Own Factory

SpaceX, xAI of Musk, and his involvement with OpenAI mean that he needs enormous computing power. Training modern large language models requires thousands of specialized GPUs/TPUs. Currently, the primary supplier of such chips, NVIDIA, cannot meet all demand, and prices remain high.

Creating its own manufacturing solves several problems at once: SpaceX will be able to control prices, guarantee access to critical infrastructure, and avoid supply delays. In conditions of geopolitical tension and trade wars, this becomes a strategic advantage. The Terafab project fits into a global trend where major technology companies (Google, Meta, Amazon, Apple) are beginning to develop their own chips instead of being fully dependent on third-party manufacturers.

Musk is simply moving faster and more decisively than the rest.

What This Means

If SpaceX manages to implement Terafab on schedule, it will reshape the geopolitics of the semiconductor industry. The United States will gain a major independent chip manufacturer, which will reduce the vulnerability of the technology sector to sanctions, trade restrictions, and disruptions in the global supply chain. For NVIDIA's competitors, this could mean the beginning of a new era where integrated companies (those with their own manufacturing) gain a serious advantage.
