Apple is developing AirPods Pro with integrated cameras that will work alongside Siri. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the device has already passed an important testing stage and will soon move to production.

How the cameras will work

The cameras in AirPods are not designed for photo or video recording — Apple specifically emphasizes this point. Instead, they capture visual information in low resolution, which users can analyze through Siri. This will allow the earbuds to act as eyes for artificial intelligence — to see what the user sees and help them in real time. The cameras will be positioned so they can capture what is in front of a person's face. Due to low resolution and on-device processing (without sending to servers), the technology should not raise serious privacy concerns. This is an important point, because adding cameras to personal devices always raises questions about security and user data confidentiality.

Practical applications

Here's how Apple plans to use the cameras in AirPods:

  • Recipes and cooking — ask Siri what to cook from the ingredients you see on the table
  • Navigation and guide — get step-by-step instructions when navigating an unfamiliar place
  • Object recognition — get information about what you see around you
  • Help with work and creativity — from finding the right product in a store to understanding details in a technical manual
  • Support in everyday tasks — text recognition, getting contextual information about objects

This moves AI from the abstract text-based realm into the realm of visual perception, where Siri can truly help a person in their immediate surroundings. Instead of describing a problem in text, the user simply shows it to the earbuds.

When this will happen

Prototypes of AirPods with cameras are at the design validation test (DVT) stage — this is the penultimate phase before mass production. After DVT comes production validation test (PVT), and then full release. Apple testers are "actively using" the prototypes, which suggests that the technology is quite ready for real-world testing. Full market launch of the device is expected no earlier than 2027, but Apple engineers are clearly rushing to bring the project to completion. This indicates that Apple sees cameras in earbuds as an important part of its AI assistant strategy and sees future in this direction for personal gadgets. In parallel, the company is developing Vision Pro, so the ecosystem could become more multi-format.

What this means

Cameras in AirPods are a more practical approach to spatial AI than glasses like Vision Pro. Earbuds are already in the ears of most users, and adding cameras doesn't require additional equipment. If Apple correctly implements privacy and makes the features truly useful, this could be the next big step in the development of AI assistants. Together with Vision Pro, this could create an ecosystem where AI can see and hear the user in different contexts.
