Rivian has rolled out a voice AI assistant for its electric vehicles. The feature is available to all owners of Rivian R1S and R1T (Generation 1 and 2) through a software update and requires an active Connect Plus subscription ($15 per month or $150 per year).
Built into the Vehicle
The assistant is built on Rivian Unified Intelligence — a comprehensive multimodal AI platform that permeates the entire vehicle stack, from engine management to entertainment. This is not just a side feature like your favorite radio, but a deeply integrated system that interacts with various aspects of the car: driving, comfort, navigation, and safety. The voice assistant can execute numerous commands: adjust climate control, open and close windows, activate navigation, control the media system, toggle wipers and headlights, change driving modes.
The assistant is also capable of interacting with third-party services, expanding functionality. Rivian emphasizes that the assistant is not built on top of the system, but is an integral part of it — this allows for better integration and response speed.
From Concept to Product
Rivian first introduced the voice assistant at its AI and Autonomy Day in 2024. At that time, it was a concept, supported by video demonstrations. Since then, the company has completed full development, testing, and optimization of the feature. Now the assistant is fully ready for deployment across the electric vehicle fleet. Integration into Unified Intelligence reflects Rivian's broader strategy — to create a cohesive AI foundation that improves user experience not fragmentarily, but systematically. This contrasts with the approach of many competitors, who connect AI assistants as separate modules, mechanically bolted to existing architecture.
Recurring Revenue Model
The voice assistant is not included in the base package. It is available only through the paid Connect Plus subscription:
- $15 per month
- $150 per year
- Active trial period for new owners
This adds a recurring revenue stream for the company. Similar subscriptions exist at Tesla (Premium Connectivity) and BMW (Connected Package). Rivian hopes that a combination of features — voice assistant, vehicle health monitoring, cloud-based routing — will encourage owners to pay for the subscription. Interestingly, the company offers both options: monthly and annual. This allows the company to reach different user segments — from tech enthusiasts willing to pay for every feature to budget-conscious owners who use the vehicle for daily commutes.
What This Means for the Market
An AI voice assistant is now a standard feature in premium electric vehicles, from Tesla to BMW. For Rivian, this is not just a feature, but a symbol of the company's ambitions: to embed AI in the DNA of the car, not slap it on as an option. Such an approach requires more investment in development, but enables a smoother user experience.
The success of this assistant could influence perception of Rivian as a company that knows how to work with AI at an architectural level. In the face of growing competition in the EV segment, such "smart" features become differentiators. Rivian can use Unified Intelligence to add new capabilities without reworking the core system.
This gives the company flexibility in competitive struggle against Tesla and the wave of traditional manufacturers that are beginning to electrify.
