Meta has added an incognito mode to WhatsApp chats with Meta AI. Now users will be able to have conversations with the AI assistant that won't be saved on their device and won't leave any digital traces in the app's chat history.

How the new feature works

Incognito mode disables automatic message saving. When you close the chat, all conversation messages are completely deleted from the app's memory and system storage. The mode is activated when creating a new dialogue with Meta AI — simply select the "incognito" option before starting the conversation, and WhatsApp will activate the protected mode with a visual indicator on the screen.

According to Meta, this feature works simply: turn on the mode, ask a question, close the window — history completely erased from your device. Convenient for those concerned about privacy or wanting to experiment with AI without digital traces that accumulate in your main history and could be accidentally discovered. Messages in incognito mode don't appear in the conversation list, aren't indexed by the app's built-in search, and aren't synced between devices through the cloud.

Complete local deletion — as if the conversation never happened. The mode only works during an active session, and when you exit the app, all data is permanently erased.

Use cases for enabling the mode

There are many practical scenarios where incognito proves useful:

  • Discussing personal or medical questions with AI that you don't want to store
  • Testing different prompts and experiments without cluttering your main history
  • Conversations you prefer not to physically save on your device
  • Business negotiations about price, salary, or contract terms
  • Research into sensitive content or sensitive information

The feature is especially useful for those who frequently experiment with AI and don't want their history to accumulate intermediate attempts, errors, and recalculations. Incognito provides complete cleanliness — each new session starts fresh, without the legacy of previous sessions.

Important privacy caveats

Here's a critical nuance that's important to understand: incognito mode protects only your local storage on the device. Meta's servers can still record and store interaction data, use it to train models, and respond to law enforcement requests. Local deletion doesn't mean server-side data deletion.

It's exactly like incognito mode in browsers — your Internet provider sees where you go, even if you don't save history locally. Here, Meta sees the conversation technically, but you don't save it on your device. The privacy level differs significantly from the complete anonymity that the word "incognito" implies.

The company can use this data for its model training purposes. The company hasn't disclosed in detail how long it stores logs of these conversations or what specific retention periods exist in their systems. This is an important question because even a locally deleted message could end up in Meta's archives indefinitely.

For now, we have to trust the company's privacy policy.

What it means

Incognito mode is a convenient feature for everyday use, but it's not complete anonymity from Meta. For users, this means another step toward controlling their digital footprint on their smartphone, although control remains local only. For Meta, it's a way to improve user trust in AI features within WhatsApp and attract those concerned about privacy. But it's worth remembering about server logs when discussing sensitive topics.
