Google Gemini has launched two new desktop features: Import Memory and Import Chat History. They allow users to quickly transfer everything their previous AI assistant learned about them into Gemini. Previously, switching AI assistants meant starting from scratch: the new assistant knew nothing about your preferences, work context, habits, and communication style.
Now Google offers a migration mechanism that lowers this barrier. The Import Memory tool works on a simple scheme: Gemini offers the user a ready-made prompt that needs to be inserted into the previous AI — for example, into ChatGPT or Claude. It generates structured output about the user, which is then pasted back into Gemini.
After this, Gemini "knows" the basic facts about the person — their preferences, work context, personal details that they once shared with another assistant. The Import Chat History feature goes further: the user requests a full export of their chats from the previous AI service and uploads the archive directly to Gemini. This way, you can transfer not only dry facts about yourself, but also the full context of past conversations.
Both tools are currently available only in the web version on desktop. Google does not specify when the features will appear in mobile applications. The launch of these features is a direct response to a similar move by Anthropic.
In early April, the company updated the memory import tool for Claude, simplifying the transition from other platforms. Google responded quickly: competition for users who have already invested time in "training" their AI assistant is becoming a separate front in the battle between major players. The emerging trend shows: AI companies increasingly view accumulated memory and chat history as a user asset, not as a way to retain them on the platform.
The ability to take your data and transfer it is a step toward greater openness, although the current implementation requires manual actions and falls short of seamless migration.
