YouTube Shorts has begun rolling out a feature for creating personal AI avatars — digital doubles that look and sound like the creator themselves. The tool allows inserting an avatar into already-filmed videos or creating entirely new Shorts without involving a real person on camera. To create an avatar, a user records a video sample through the YouTube Create app or the main YouTube app.
The platform processes the recording and generates a digital model that can then be used repeatedly. The company positions avatars as a "safer and more secure" way of working with AI — unlike third-party deepfake services, the data remains within Google's ecosystem. All videos created with an avatar will be automatically labeled as AI-generated — this is a platform requirement as part of its transparency policy.
Additionally, creators will be able to control whether other users can use their avatar in remixes, and can delete the model at any time. The launch appears ambiguous against the backdrop of YouTube's fight against AI spam, deepfake fraud, and unauthorized impersonations of real people. The platform simultaneously restricts abuse while adding generative tools that technically do the same thing — create realistic copies of people on video.
For creators, this potentially changes the logic of content production: record once, and the avatar does the work for you going forward. This is particularly relevant for channels with high posting frequency or for creators who want to appear in multiple videos simultaneously without additional filming. The question is how audiences will react upon realizing that their favorite blogger on screen is not quite themselves.
