Google has launched a native Gemini application for macOS — a full-featured desktop client that goes beyond the browser interface and offers deep integration with the operating system. The key feature of the new application is the ability to share the screen with Gemini. A user can show the assistant any content currently displayed on the screen: documents, application interfaces, charts, code.

This includes local files — meaning Gemini can help with content stored on the computer without requiring upload to servers through the browser. This approach brings Gemini closer to the format already used by competitors. OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Desktop back in 2024, betting specifically on contextual awareness: the assistant sees the screen and responds to what's happening.

Microsoft Copilot is also deeply embedded in Windows. Google, it seems, decided not to fall behind and bring similar functionality to the Apple platform. For the Mac audience, this is particularly significant: macOS has traditionally been popular among developers, designers, and media professionals — people for whom an AI assistant with screen context is most useful.

The ability to work with local files without forced cloud storage reduces barriers to professional use. While details about the full set of features and system requirements are limited, the very fact of releasing a native client suggests that Google takes the desktop seriously — and is ready to compete not only in the browser but also at the operating system level.
