Google has released a native Gemini application for macOS that allows you to invoke the AI assistant at any moment without switching between windows. The main feature is the Option + Space hotkey. It opens a floating chat bubble on top of the current window.

The user can ask a question, and Gemini will respond immediately in the context of what the user is doing. If you allow the application access to the screen, the assistant will see the active window and can rely on its contents when formulating a response. In terms of how it works, the tool is reminiscent of the updated Apple Spotlight, which in recent versions of macOS has also learned to perform actions on the device.

However, Gemini goes further: in addition to answering questions, the application supports image, video, and music generation directly from the desktop interface. Before sharing screen content, the system will request explicit user permission — Gemini does not get access to system information without consent. This is an important point from a privacy perspective, given that the assistant sees everything open on the monitor.

Google is consistently expanding Gemini's presence on desktop platforms. Previously, the company had already released an application for Windows. The arrival of a macOS version fills an obvious gap: until now, macOS users could only work with Gemini through a browser, which was noticeably inferior in convenience compared to native solutions from competitors — in particular, Claude for Desktop from Anthropic and the ChatGPT application from OpenAI, which have long been available on both platforms.

The launch of the Mac application is a signal that Google is serious about competing for desktop users' attention, not just for the mobile segment where Gemini is integrated into Android by default. How much the quick call via hotkey and screen context will change user habits will be seen over time, but the direction is clear: an AI assistant should be where a person works, not force them to switch to a separate tab.
