Elon Musk has been waging a personal war against OpenAI for three years now, the very company he helped found. This confrontation has long since transcended ordinary business and transformed into something between a technological race and a personal vendetta. Musk doesn't just want to create a better language model, he wants to punish Sam Altman for turning a nonprofit project into a closed-source corporate giant. Yet xAI's path to the summit has proven far more thorny than fans of Tesla and SpaceX predicted on social media. While the industry discusses the capabilities of Claude 3.5 or the forthcoming GPT-5, Musk's project called Grok continues to battle its own demons and ambiguous reputation.

xAI's main product at this moment looks like an attempt to sit on two stools. On one hand, Grok demonstrates impressive learning speeds and real-time integration with X social network data. On the other hand, the chatbot regularly finds itself at the center of scandals.

One moment it spews antisemitic tirades, the next it generates frankly sexualized images of politicians, which instantly make global headlines. These incidents seriously undermine xAI's position as a potential partner for major business. Corporations fear unpredictability, and Grok at this point is an embodiment of chaos.

While OpenAI and Anthropic spend millions on alignment and safety of their models, Musk bets on absolute freedom of speech, which sometimes borders on the absence of common sense.

But one shouldn't write off xAI too soon. Musk possesses a resource that most competitors lack — access to incredible computing power and capital. Construction of the Colossus supercomputer, equipped with hundreds of thousands of Nvidia H100 chips, shows that xAI is ready to play big. If Musk truly decides to combine the resources of his companies — data from X, xAI's computing power, and Tesla's engineering expertise — he could create an ecosystem capable of shaking OpenAI's dominance. Rumors of a possible merger or tighter integration of Musk's assets are already forcing Anthropic investors to reconsider their strategies. Money and hardware decide too much in this industry to be ignored.

The conflict between xAI and market leaders is not simply a struggle for market share, it is a clash of philosophies. OpenAI and Anthropic build safe, controlled, and often overly cautious AI. Musk offers an alternative: AI that doesn't fear sharp edges and says what it thinks (or what the algorithm allows it to). The problem is that to create a truly intelligent system, it's not enough to simply remove restrictions. You need to teach the model to reason, plan, and understand context at a human level. In this regard, Grok is noticeably behind Claude or GPT, remaining more of a tool for entertainment and trolling than for serious scientific or engineering work.

xAI's future depends on whether the company can outgrow the stage of teenage rebellion. If Musk can direct the colossal computing resources toward solving fundamental problems in machine learning, rather than just generating memes, we will see real competition. For now, OpenAI and Anthropic can sleep relatively peacefully, watching their main opponent spend time extinguishing another reputational fire. However, in the world of technology, everything changes too fast, and underestimating a man who launched rockets and electrified the auto industry would be a big mistake. The market awaits a third strong player, and xAI is the only candidate with the audacity and money to claim that spot.

The key question: can Musk turn Grok from a scandalous chatbot into a reliable tool before investors run out of patience and OpenAI releases a next-generation model?
