Singapore has launched an ambitious social project: the country's parliament unanimously passed a resolution requiring that economic growth in the age of artificial intelligence does not lead to unemployment.

"Growth without jobs" — the main fear of the AI era

The concept of "jobless growth" describes a situation where the economy grows, productivity increases, but the number of jobs decreases. This happens when AI and automation replace people faster than new professions are created. Singapore fully understands this danger: in a small economy where half of exports depend on fintech and technology, such a scenario would be catastrophic. The parliamentary resolution is not a law, but a political commitment. However, its unanimous passage (all parties voted in favor) is a rare occurrence and a signal that the problem is being taken seriously.

Why Singapore specifically

The city-state has long bet on digitalization: Asia's first fintech hub, a leader in technology penetration, actively investing in AI and robotics. But rapid automation implementation could turn into a social crisis in a country with 5.5 million people. Singapore plans to create an ecosystem where AI growth goes in parallel with investments in worker retraining and new professions.

Main challenges

  • Aging population — older workers are harder to retrain for new roles
  • Regional competition — neighboring India and the Philippines offer cheap labor
  • Narrow economy — dependence on fintech and logistics creates vulnerability to technological shifts
  • Social mobility — training programs are needed for transition to new sectors

Parliament also discussed the need to support small businesses, which often cannot afford AI implementation and are losing competitiveness to large corporations.

What this means

Singapore's resolution is a signal to the world that technological progress must go hand in hand with social responsibility. If this does not happen, GDP growth does not save the economy from internal instability. For other countries, this is a lesson: preparing for a future with AI requires not only investments in technology, but also in people.
