Google has introduced a major update to the AI Overviews feature in its search engine. Now AI overviews will be supplemented with direct quotes from public discussions online. This will transform the way people search for information, especially when they're interested in other users' opinions rather than just facts.

Where the quotes will come from

Google will add quotes from public discussions on Reddit, forums, social media, and blogs to AI overviews. The company believes that including real people's opinions will make the AI's responses more contextual and useful. Instead of an abstract summary prepared by artificial intelligence, users will see what people actually discussed and recommended. This is especially important for questions where personal perspective matters: product selection, recommendation reviews, health or travel advice, and experience assessment.

Google began experimenting with Reddit content several months ago, but is now expanding the approach to all types of public discussions:

  • Reddit discussions and comments on posts
  • Public forums and topic-specific communities
  • Posts on social media and authors' personal blogs
  • Reviews and recommendations on open platforms
  • Questions and answers on services like Quora and Stack Overflow

Integration with paid subscriptions

Google is also adding direct links to paid news content in AI Overviews. If a user has an active subscription to a publication (for example, through Google News or other services), the AI overview will display links to full articles from their subscriptions. This allows quick access to authorized content without additional searches and logins. For publishers, this is a new traffic channel from organic search. People will be able to navigate directly from search results to paid content if they already have access.

What this means

The update demonstrates how Google is adapting search to the era of large language models. Instead of simply presenting facts, the neural network now integrates public context: real people's opinions, their discussions, verified sources. For users, this means richer answers that take into account human experience. For publishers, it's an opportunity to reach an audience not only through citations but through direct integration of paid content.
