Anthropic has always positioned Claude as a tool for business and developers. The company created an AI assistant with an emphasis on reliability, security, and accuracy — qualities important to corporate clients. But the consumer market is growing faster than the company expected, and now it is fundamentally changing its approach.

How Consumer Base Emerged

The consumer chatbot market was long a monopoly of OpenAI. ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and became the first mass-market AI assistant — within a month, it gained a million users. Google and Microsoft hastily released Gemini and Copilot, but ChatGPT remains the leader. Anthropic was in no rush to enter the consumer market, believing the B2B segment was sufficient. But over the past 6–12 months, Claude has organically gained millions of users. People discover it through word-of-mouth, YouTube reviews, and thanks to better answer quality for certain tasks. Consumers are beginning to seek alternatives.

What Changes for Consumers

Now Anthropic is investing in consumer experience. The company has accelerated mobile app development, plans to launch consumer subscription (similar to ChatGPT Plus with monthly payment) and is simplifying the interface for regular users.

  • Mobile app with chat history synchronization
  • Affordable basic tier ($5–10/month) with request limits
  • Built-in history, favorite chats, and folders
  • Integrations with Gmail, Google Drive, Slack for context from external sources

Anthropic is also investing in personalization: Claude will learn from user chat history to provide more relevant answers.

Direct Challenge to ChatGPT

ChatGPT dominates thanks to a combination of marketing, first-mover advantage, and network effects. But Claude is growing through word-of-mouth and attracts users who are disappointed by ChatGPT's hallucinations, want a safer alternative, or need better quality for specific tasks.

"Consumers are beginning to realize there are alternatives," says a

Gartner analyst.

Anthropic can play the quality and safety card. The company does not engage with scandalous content like OpenAI, and Claude is known for more honest answers when it doesn't know something.

What This Means for the Market

The consumer AI chatbot market is fragmenting. ChatGPT remains the leader, but Claude, Gemini, and other solutions are entering from the sides, offering specialization, security, and better user experience. Competition is growing, prices are falling, and service quality is improving. For Anthropic, this is a critical moment — if the company doesn't attract millions of consumers now, it will be harder later.
