Over two months of using Gemini in Android Auto, I became convinced that a voice AI-assistant truly transforms the driving experience. It's not just a marketing gimmick, but a practical tool that has simplified four key tasks in the car and made daily drives safer and more comfortable.

Music and Podcasts Without Hands

Before, I often got distracted looking for the right track, playlist, or podcast. First, I had to touch the screen, then scroll through the list, and select. This happened while driving, meaning I involuntarily looked away from the road for a few seconds.

Now it works completely differently. I just say "Play 90s rock" or "Play a podcast about artificial intelligence," and Gemini finds the content on Spotify, YouTube Music, or Apple Music in seconds. The system understands context, anticipates my mood, and often suggests exactly what I'm looking for on the first try. It's especially convenient when I need a specific genre but can't remember the artist. "Play 80s funk"—and classic tracks start playing. This frees up my attention and doesn't require taking my eyes off the road. Over two months, I've spent about 200 hours in the car, and I've started almost all of that content by voice.

Safe Navigation and Communication

Voice-controlled route management works quickly and reliably. "Route me to the office," "Where's the nearest gas station," "Navigate home"—all of this is handled without touching the screen. The system is integrated with Google Maps and builds routes considering real traffic, time of day, and even road construction.

But the most useful feature is sending SMS, WhatsApp, or email messages right while driving. I dictate the text ("Tell Masha I'm on my way, I'll be there in 20 minutes"), Gemini recognizes speech with good accuracy, composes the message, shows it on the screen for review, asks for confirmation, and sends it. No distractions from the road, and the risk of accidents because the driver is looking at the screen is minimal.

Four Ways Gemini Simplified Driving

Beyond music and navigation, I discovered several other very useful applications in my daily routine:

  • Climate and interior lighting control for the car (if the car supports it and is synced with Google Assistant)
  • Sending email and Slack messages to work when I'm on the road and urgently need to tell a colleague or manager something
  • Finding real-time information about traffic, accidents, and alternate routes when the usual route is blocked
  • Setting reminders and creating shopping lists (for example, for the supermarket) to process later when I park at home

Each of these features saves me 30–60 seconds per trip, which over the course of a month amounts to 10–20 hours of saved time and attention.

What This Means

Google is consistently embedding AI into devices that people use every day. This is not limited to smartphones—it now includes cars, smart speakers, tablets, and even microwaves in the future. Gemini in Android Auto is not just a new version of Assistant; it's a symbol that voice interfaces are becoming the primary way to interact with technology while driving. This is not only more convenient but noticeably safer. The driver focuses on the road and mirrors while AI performs support functions in the background. For Google, this is another step in integrating AI into every aspect of our lives.
