Google has launched Gemini Spark, a cloud-based AI agent available in the premium Google AI Ultra tier. Unlike OpenAI Operator, Spark runs in the cloud and can perform tasks around the clock without human involvement.
How Gemini Spark Works
Gemini Spark is a cloud agent based on Gemini 2.0, Google's latest generation of models. It can see the screen, click buttons, fill out forms, and even remain active in the background waiting for results. For example, the agent can track ticket prices and purchase them when they drop, or monitor warehouse stock levels.
Spark's key feature is cloud execution. Unlike browser-based agents that only work while the tab is open, Spark is not tied to your browser. Even if you close the tab or turn off your computer, the agent will continue working on Google's servers. This is more convenient for long-running tasks that require hours or days of work.
The agent can remember context between runs: if you asked it to find plane tickets cheaper than $200, it will remember this condition and return with results when it finds a suitable option.
Examples of Use
Google provided several examples of how Spark can help in real life. The agent can register for a webinar, fill out an application form, and remind you an hour before it starts. It can compare prices for a product across five marketplaces, create a summary, and recommend the best option. For business, this could mean competitor monitoring: the agent tracks competitor prices, checks product availability, parses reviews, and generates a report every morning.
Pricing and Availability
Google AI Ultra costs from $100 per month and includes access to Spark in a limited capacity. At launch, this is a beta version with a cap on daily operations. Google did not specify exact limits, but hinted that serious automation will require additional payment.
Core capabilities in the base tier:
- Cloud execution 24/7 without interruption
- Support for browser automation (purchases, bookings, research)
- Context retention between sessions
- Integration with major web services (Gmail, Drive, etc.)
- Daily operation limit
For comparison: OpenAI Operator is currently only available in ChatGPT Pro ($20/month) and works in the browser manually under user visual control. It can also perform tasks on the web, but not around the clock.
Strategic Position
Cloud AI agents are becoming a premium product. Google is betting on integration into its ecosystem (Gmail, Drive, Docs) and cloud execution, while OpenAI is betting on browser simplicity and explicit control. Both strategies make sense.
The cloud is more reliable for critical operations: if an agent needs to check a price every hour, it's better for that to happen on Google's servers rather than on your computer. The browser is more transparent and clearer to the user: you see every click, every action.
What This Means
For end users, this means automation is entering the premium tier. With basic ChatGPT or Gemini you get a chatbot. For $20–100 per month — an AI agent that does things for you. For business, this creates the opportunity to integrate cloud agents into their workflows — through APIs or built-in tools. But this will remain the domain of expensive subscriptions and enterprise solutions for a long time.
