YouTube has finally decided that AI content labels should be visible to viewers. The platform has moved information about synthetic video from a hidden spot in the description directly below the player, where it's impossible to miss. At the same time, YouTube announced automatic identification of AI-generated content on the platform.

Where and How the New Labels Are Visible

Previously, information that a video was created with AI was buried in a dropdown description. Now the 'AI' label next to an information icon appears directly below the player, above the channel name and subscribe button. On mobile devices, this is very noticeable.

For YouTube Shorts, the label has also moved to a more visible location. This is especially important because Shorts are often watched while scrolling quickly, and viewers previously might not have noticed that the content was synthetic. Now it's practically impossible to avoid this information.

Automatic Identification Begins

YouTube doesn't rely solely on creators' voluntary labeling. The platform announced the launch of automatic AI content detection using its own tools and Google's SynthID technology. The system will analyze videos and label synthetic content without the creator's involvement.

This is a significant shift in approach. Previously, creators themselves decided whether to label their AI video. Now YouTube actively searches for such content and labels it. The automation removes the question of whether the creator forgot to indicate the source or simply didn't want to.

  • Labels are visible below the video player
  • Works on both long-form videos and Shorts
  • Information cannot be hidden in the description
  • Automatic detection uses SynthID and other Google methods
  • The system works on all types of synthetic content — from voices to full videos

Part of Google's Larger Strategy

This update is no accident. At the recent Google I/O conference, the company announced expanded efforts to verify and label AI content. YouTube, as the world's largest video platform, is becoming the main battlefield for this effort.

Google is investing in synthetic content identification technologies not just for YouTube. The company is expanding verification programs to all of its services. Labels indicating content created by neural networks are designed to help users quickly understand whether they're looking at something real or synthetic.

What This Means

YouTube has finally understood that hiding information about AI content in the description is ineffective. The label must be visible at first glance.

This may help reduce the spread of misinformation and improve media literacy among the audience, though relying solely on labels is also naive.
