Chinese ByteDance, the creator of TikTok, will develop its own server processor. The initiative aims to scale the company's AI infrastructure amid a global shortage of high-performance chips.

Why ByteDance is Entering Microelectronics

ByteeDance is developing a custom CPU because the current processor market is insufficient for its growing needs. TikTok is a platform with more than 150 million monthly active users. This scale requires enormous computing power: real-time video content processing, generation of personalized recommendations, application of AI filters, and analysis of user behavior. The global shortage of high-performance server processors has become a bottleneck for development. Large companies like Meta, Apple, and Google have been developing their own chips for several years to reduce dependence on Intel and AMD and adapt hardware for their specific tasks.

ARM or RISC-V: ByteDance's Strategic Choice

ByteeDance has preliminarily identified two main directions: ARM architecture and the open RISC-V standard.

  • ARM — dominates the mobile industry and cloud services (AWS Graviton). Well-developed ecosystem, but requires licensing fees from Arm Holdings.
  • RISC-V — a young open standard without licensing fees. Developed by a consortium, it provides complete technological independence. For a Chinese company, choosing RISC-V has additional significance — maximum independence from Western standards amid sanctions and trade restrictions.

Who Else is Developing Their Own Processors

ByteeDance is not the first company on this path. Google created TPU for machine learning, Meta is developing Maia for AI acceleration, Amazon is developing Graviton and Trainium, Apple is known for A-series and M-series. This is a sign of a shift in the industry: standard processors are no longer sufficient for giants.

What Does This Mean

If ByteDance releases its own processor, it will strengthen its position in the AI race and reduce vulnerability to import restrictions. For other companies, it demonstrates the possibility of local microelectronics development on open standards. *Meta has been recognized as an extremist organization and is banned in Russia.
