Starting September 2026, Russian schools will add an advanced computer science course with a focus on "Artificial Intelligence" to their curriculum. This is not just another elective, but a serious level of training that will lay the foundation for working with one of the fastest-growing technologies of our time.

What Will Be Taught

The program focuses on practical skills necessary for working with AI in real-world projects. Children will learn the basics of working with data—how to collect, structure, and prepare information for analysis by AI models. This includes understanding datasets, their preprocessing, cleaning, and organizing information without which a model simply won't work.

A separate and important section is dedicated to prompt engineering—the art of correctly formulating tasks for AI models to obtain high-quality and relevant results. Students will learn how to properly format context for models, what information to provide, and what nuances to pay attention to. The program also includes fundamentals in understanding neural network logic and their limitations—what they do well and where they make mistakes.

IT industry representatives emphasize that this is a long-overdue change. At a time when AI is becoming an increasingly common tool across various fields, literacy in this area is no longer a prospect but an urgent necessity for young people who will work with these technologies every day.

Why Children Need AI Education

The practical value of the course is obvious. While most AI tools are created in English, developers are actively localizing them for the Russian market. Russian services for working with data and AI models are already operating, where people who understand how to effectively use these technologies are critically needed.

Competence in AI interaction strengthens competitiveness in any profession. It doesn't matter whether a person will work in marketing, design, programming, analytics, or project management—knowledge of model basics will be useful everywhere. AI is becoming a cross-functional skill, as email once did or the ability to work with spreadsheets. Those who understand how to work with models while still in school will gain a serious advantage in the job market in a few years.

Key program elements:

  • Working with datasets and their preprocessing for models
  • Prompt engineering fundamentals and the art of requesting information from AI
  • Understanding neural network logic and their limitations
  • Context formation and interpretation of model results
  • Ethics of AI use and responsibility when working with the technology

Not a Replacement, But a Complement

The advanced course will be introduced alongside the basic computer science program, not instead of it. This means that students will be able to choose whether to dive deeper into AI or stick with the standard curriculum. This flexible system will allow identifying interested children and preparing them for possible specialization in this field already at the university level, and then in the job market.

What This Means

The introduction of a specialized AI course in schools is a signal that the technology has finally ceased to be an exotic novelty and is becoming part of standard education. This could help Russia strengthen its position in training personnel for the rapidly growing AI industry and allow young people to understand earlier whether this field of activity interests them.
